Canon 300mm 2.8 IS L test & comparison

Test Notes:

Except where noted IS off, with mirror lock up (MLU), 2 sec delay, tripod
Images were shot in landscape format and cropped - no resizing. To review in detail right click on the main image and "save as" and review in Photoshop or similar.
JPG compression at level 11 (minimal compression)
Canon 1.4 TC and 2x TC II used - 2.8x indicates both stacked
EXIF displays the correct focal length for the 1.4, or 2x but not if they are stacked
Similarly, the F stop is not correctly recorded when stacked. The first shot is always wide open so if both the 1.4 and 2x are used the correct f stop is F8, not 5.6
Images RAW, PC CS conversion, no adjustments.
Levels/curves and sharpening are required to "normalize" the images
300mm lens is a rental from Vistek in Toronto
Lenses tested: 70-200 2.8L (all shots at 200mm), 100-400mm at 200, 300 and 400mm, and 300mm 2.8 IS L
Bottom line: the 300 stacked with the 1.4x and 2x gives an effective focal length of 1092mm on the Canon 1D (which has an additional 1.3x factor) with a quality that is entirely acceptable.
